Modernizing our electrical system

We are working towards a totally integrated, smart electrical grid to support the increase in electricity demand and technological developments. By investing in a robust, secure and intuitive grid, we are preparing to deliver modern and innovative electricity services our customers expect.

To support our Grid Modernization initiative, we are currently investing in three key areas of development: 

Upgrading our meter technology

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is the latest in metering technology, using meters to track consumption and power quality in real-time. The deployment of AMI technology across our entire Alberta service territory will allow faster detection of outages, and enable customers to be better informed on their usage patterns.

Advanced Distribution Management Systems

We are deploying an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) that will provide a platform for a variety of smart grid functions. An ADMS will enable improved grid efficiency and resiliency, allowing us to remotely respond to outages and other grid conditions quickly and safely. It can also be expanded in the future to support greater customer demands for green technology integration such as solar panels and electric vehicles.

Asset Modernization

We are investing in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) upgrades at key locations throughout the electricity grid. These upgrades will provide valuable remote visibility and control at key switching locations, significantly reducing our response times to dynamic electric grid conditions or outages.
